Large Mermaid Painting completed for show in West Indies

I am honored to be part of an art show at Christophe Harbor in St. Kitts this fall. The Dale Gallery is right in the new upscale yacht marina. Since shipping paintings are very pricey, especially for large paintings, I did this mermaid on a flat prepared canvas and will roll it for shipment. The gallery will help by getting it framed and stretched there.
“Christophe Siren” is 36×48″

Along the shore…

Another smaller painting completed. I wanted to keep the expressionistic feeling with larger brush strokes and energetic touches. “Blue Crab” is 20×16″.
Sometimes, the more I work on a painting, create details and textures, I lose the expressionistic style that I am aiming for. So this one, I called it DONE and am happy with the result.

Two paintings painted from trip photos from California

When I returned from an 18 day trip in California visiting family and taking a wonderful road trip with my sister…We stopped to rest in a little town south of Big Sur called Cambria. A small motor lodge on the ocean was so great and I had the joy of watching the sun go down in the Pacific. Because California was my home for half of my life, the trip was familiar. Since I live on a small island peninsula in Florida, the sun doesnt set in the ocean so this was a treat. “Cambria Rocks” and “Cambia Sunset” are both 30×40″ gallery wraps.

Series of Rays and edge of tide continues

I started the manta and sting ray collection late this summer and it is continuing with new challenges. The largest one yet is this new one of one ray gliding over the sand in the shallows of the tide. First, I paint the sandy bottom, then add shells and fish and rays with a cool blue shadows. Then I make the refraction highlights on the sand and under the ray. The last part is the reflection of the sky hitting the top of the water with highlights. "Ray Close to Shore" is 36x48". "Starfish Under Shallows" and "Starfish Fishing" are both 24x24".

Semi abstract Beach landscape painting

Obviously I have been obsessed with painting water last month. This semi abstract beach landscape has some unique details with metallic inference paints that add some neat effects. I actually started this with using a palette knife to paint on flexible plaster to form the basis of the shoreline and waves. Then I added raw umber to the entire painting with a glazing medium. After that was dry, I started dry brushing the colors into the texture. I actually wanted this to be more abstract but find that the longer I work on a painting, the less abstract it becomes. I a still happy with the result and think it will look great on a wall. The size is 16x40x1.5".

New series: The graceful rays gliding under the water

I have been challenged by a dream I had and then tried to invent how to paint the scene of rays gliding on the ocean floor. Many times, while vacationing on tropical islands, I have swam with rays and find that they glide so gracefully. First I painted the bottom of the ocean, then I painted the rays with the reflections and shadows. Finally I worked on the surface water and its reflections and fluid transparency of the clear water.
